Knitting Blues

I am going with a blue theme this month I just noticed all my listing have blue in them. I love blue.

So I have to tell you about this custom Knitting needle case holder I just finished and shipped to one of my etsy customer for a gift for her mother for her birthday. I used a lot of hand dyed and batiks and crazy quilted them. I am only making the knitting needle case by special request they will not be listed in my shop, I am focusing more on the children’s items and gloves.. But I will always be willing to make one so If you want one just ask.

I started with the rainbow of colors and created the crazy quilt top. Then I inside I add a Velcro pocket for all your stitch markers and sewing needles. The I layer the pockets and add some of the horizontal stitch for the needle pockets. The I sew all the layers together, flip it like a pillow and continue sewing the horizontal pockets through all the layers. I use clear thread in the bobbin to not have stitches showing on top of the crazy quilting.

Fun With The Sun!

Today we did a fun project with the sun. Solar Prints or Cyanotype. Which is a chemical process that use the sun as a catalyst and dyes the paper/fabric. I bought a kit to get started but I can't wait to explore more with this printing method more about that below.

  1. You take the paper which must be kept out of the sun (or fluorescent lighting)because once you expose it it does not work. But no fear the kit comes with the paper in a dark bag. I woulds carefully cut the bag so you can take one sheet out at a time. So get to the bag before the kids rip it open.

  2. Then you place you solid items on the paper.

  3. The kit comes with a window folder to hold the items down.

  4. Then immediately put it in the sun. It takes 2-3 mins in bight sun light the sheet will turn white/yellow it is done

  5. Take it inside to remove the shapes.

  6. Immediately and Careful rinse the paper in water it will change colors to blue as in the final image. You have to do rinse it otherwise it does not work. Trust me I did not read the instructions.

  7. Then I blot the paper dry sandwiched between 2 paper towels and then let it air dry completely.

So cool.

So It got me thinking about what fun this would be if you could play with fabric... Guess what there is a fabulous artist Linda Stemer's that already is and you can purchase fabric an of tee shirts from Blue Prints on Fabric I am thinking this is something I want to try when I go camping with the kids. In the woods go for a nature walk pick up leaves (watching out for poison ivy) then have the kids make tee's. What fun!

Philadelphia Soul Win!!!

I am not normally a big sports fan but a few weeks ago the Philadelphia Soul became the Area Football Champs!!!!! The Soul are a team that is near and dear to my heart. In case you missed it this is the team that is partially owned by John Bon Jovi. Arena Football is a great spectator sport it is fast moving and fun. I have a tendency to loose interest at most sporting events, but not at area football, my son loves it and it is affordable. So get if you chance go see a game next season. Why the post from a kids designer... well in a past career I worked with JBJ on designing the teams uniform, and I proud of them for doing so well. They are a great group of people. Congratulation Philadelphia Soul!
